Isaac and Rebekah serve as a paradigm for
Jewish marriage, and yet, their relationship
is more complex than it may appear. MORE>

Burial of Sarah

(engraving by Gustave Doré from
 the 1865 La Sainte Bible)

Following the death of Sarah,
 Abraham purchases a burial plot
and sends his servant to find a
 wife for Isaac.
Sarah dies at 127 years of age in
Hebron in the land of Canaan
Abraham mourns her, then
asks property owners there to
grant him burial space so that
he may bury his dead out of
 his sight.
Abraham bought a piece of land with a cave on it.

Knowing that Abraham is ennobled
by God, they are willing to give
 Abraham the choicest land, but
Abraham insists on paying for it.
Only then does Abraham bury his
wife in the cave of Machpelah
 in the land of Canaan.

Kings I 1:1-31

Abishag at the bed of David, with

Bathsheba, Solomon, and Nathan
(from a Dutch Bible circa 1435)

In David's weakest moment,
 his throne becomes vulnerable.

Abraham's hope for the future was embodied
in his son Isaac, but in this week's parashah,
Haye Sarah, as the patriarch nears death,
the prospects for a dynastic family seem dim.
Isaac and his wife Rebecca have yet to
 even conceive a child.

I may bury my dead before me.

Classic Questions
Why did Avraham describe himself
as an "immigrant and an inhabitant
with you"? (v. 4)

Have a wonderful week
