The Miraculous Nature Of Covenant
God's covenant with Noah showed
him and us the possibility of transforming
the human condition of loneliness into
 the miracle of connection.

An interesting element in the story of Noah
and the flood is the amount of time spent
by Noah preparing for the big event.
All the steps of the building of the ark,
the collecting of the animals, and then
bringing them into the ark are described in
some detail. According to a Rabbinic tradition,
Noah spent 120 years building the ark and getting
everything ready for the crucial moment MORE

A flood destroys all living creatures,
 aside from Noah, his family,
and the animals in their ark.

An Islamic depiction of Noah

Noah was a righteous man,
 blameless in his generation.
 Noah walked with God.

God said to Noah, "Because the earth is filled with
wrongdoing and corruption and robbery I am
 going to destroy it.
Make yourself an ark of wood with enclosures
for animals and gather food for all aboard.
I shall bring a flood through the water upon the
earth and destroy all that has the spirit of life."

Isaiah 54:1-55:5

Explicit and implicit references
 to the great biblical Flood.

The weekly haftarah is often a single-minded
metaphor for the week's Torah portion.
Yet in haftarat Noah, Isaiah employs metaphors
of his own on several layers.
He speaks of the exiled nation of Israel as
a woman unable to have children,
stranded in despair,
but about to be redeemed. More

The rainbow reminds Jews of God's
glory and faithfulness to the covenant.

After the Flood and the deliverance of
Noah and his family, God shows Noah
the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of
His covenant with mankind that He
will never again bring a deluge to
destroy them (Genesis 9:8-17).More
